Spiced pumpkin butter has a sweet, creamy flavor that's easy to create in your own kitchen. This can be used as a topping in a variety of breakfast dishes, sides, and desserts. You can spread it on your toast in the morning, add it to pumpkin cookies, or serve it with your pancakes. No matter how you choose to use it, this slow cooker pumpkin butter recipe will be your new favorite taste—all year round.

Tips for Using a Slow Cooker

Here are a few tips for using a slow cooker to make spiced pumpkin butter, or any other meal that requires this appliance.

  • Avoid overfilling the pot. Slow cookers work best when they’re halfway to three-quarters full. If you overload it, the food might not cook completely or could boil over. However, if you don’t load it enough, then the food inside might burn.
  • Avoid opening your slow cooker when the lid is meant to remain on. If you open the lid unnecessarily, the heat inside is going to escape. This will cause whatever you’re cooking to take longer to finish.
  • Use a non-stick cooking spray. Although using a disposable slow cooker liner is ideal for easy clean-up, if you don’t have one handy, then you should spray the inside of your slow cooker with cooking spray. This will prevent the ingredients from sticking to the walls, and should help make the machine's finish last longer.

Ingredients

  • 3 15 ounce cans pumpkin

  • 2 cup pure maple syrup

  • ¾ cup apple juice

  • 3 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • ½ teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. Add Ingredients

In a 3 1/2- or 4-quart slow cooker combine all of the ingredients.

  2. Cook the Mixture

Cover and cook on high for 2 hours; stir. Cook, uncovered, on high for 6 to 7 hours more or until mixture is very thick and has reduced to 4 cups, stirring every hour for the first 4 hours and then every 20 to 30 minutes. Cool at least 1 hour or cover and chill overnight.

  3. Package and Store

Ladle into half-pint canning jars or freezer containers, leaving a 1/2-inch headspace. Seal and label. Store in the refrigerator up to 1 week or freeze up to 6 months.

For easy cleanup, line your slow cooker with a disposable slow cooker liner. Add ingredients as directed in the recipe. Once your dish is finished cooking, spoon the food out of your slow cooker and simply dispose of the liner. Do not lift or transport the disposable liner with food inside.
