Gooey, crispy mozzarella cheese sticks are the perfect appetizer or late night snack when you’re craving something cheesy and delicious. This recipe is easy and straightforward to follow, so you should be able to make golden sticks every time. Pair them with some rich marinara sauce and your stomach will thank you.

Tips for Making Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Follow these simple tips and you'll end up with tasty, golden mozzarella cheese sticks.

  • Fully coat your sticks. If you miss a spot, then the cheese could easily escape. Make sure that the breading completely covers every stick for a great tasting snack. It’s best to repeat the breading process twice, or even three times, to ensure the stick stays intact. When the breading is thicker, there's a smaller chance that the stick will burst.
  • Cut your cheese into small pieces. The cheese is going to expand while cooking, so don’t cut your block of mozzarella into pieces that are too big. If you’re using pre-made cheese sticks, simply cut them in the center.
  • Test out different dipping sauces. While pairing mozzarella with marinara sauce is the classic way to eat this treat, you could also try dipping your sticks into nacho cheese sauce, ranch dressing, or garlic sauce.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten

  • 2 tablespoon water

  • 12 mozzarella cheese sticks or one 16-ounce block mozzarella cheese, cut into twelve 4x1/2-inch sticks

  • 1 cup seasoned fine dry bread crumbs

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil

  • ¾ cup marinara sauce

Directions

  1. In a shallow dish stir together first three ingredients (through pepper). In another shallow dish combine eggs and the water. Dip cheese sticks into egg mixture, then coat with flour mixture. Dip again in egg mixture, then coat with bread crumbs. Place on a baking sheet and freeze 1 hour or until firm.*

  2. In a large skillet heat oil over medium heat. Cook frozen cheese sticks, six at a time, in hot oil 2 to 3 minutes or until golden, turning occasionally (add additional oil if needed). Drain on paper towels.

  3. In a small saucepan heat marinara sauce over medium heat. Serve cheese sticks with warm marinara sauce.

*To Make Ahead

Transfer frozen cheese sticks to an airtight container. Freeze up to 1 month.
